1950s

Stafford E. Thornton (CE '59, '62) was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Sciences by the faculty at the West Virginia University Institute of Technology. He retired from the WVU Tech faculty in July 2000 after 36 years of service.

1960s

James E. Drewry (Aero '60, '62) is the 2001 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from Tau Beta Phi. He is executive vice president and COO for Oak Ridge Associated Universities in Tennessee.

T. Howard Noel (CE '61) received the Guy Kelcey Award in the planning and design division of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.

Henry C. Englund (EE '65) is chief executive officer and chairman of the board of trustees development committee at the Evergreens, a continuing-care retirement community in Moorestown, N.J.

Geoffrey N. Irvine (MAE '68) is vice president of AMC Delancey Group Inc. in Philadelphia, overseeing national property operations, leasing and development.

1970s

Stephen Finger (Aero '70) is executive vice president for engineering and operations for Pratt & Whitney Co.

William C. Forbes, Jr. (CE '71) has been named a diplomate in water and wastewater engineering by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. Mr. Forbes works for Burgess & Niple, an engineering consulting firm.

Roy Edward Perkins (ChE '71) is president of Noramco Inc. and international vice president for Tasmanian Alkaloids.

Thomas D. Ardeern (Aero '75) is vice wing commander for the 8th Fighter Wing in Korea.

Alison H. Ingram (CE '75) is a project manager with the Fairfax County Water Authority in Fairfax, Va.

Christopher O. Grandle (EE '77) was honored as Big Brother of the Year and was awarded the Disability/Aetna Award for Inclusion of People with Disabilities by Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America.

Steve Johnson (CS '78) is CEO/owner of the consulting company Sigma Six Corp.

Calvin L. Witt (MAE '78) is assistant vice president and chief mechanical engineer for Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern Inc., an architectural and engineering design firm

1980s

Charles D. Ross (Nuc. '80, Engr. Physics '83, MSE '88) is associate professor of physics at Longwood College. He recently authored "Trial by Fire: Science, Technology, and the Civil War" and "Civil War Acoustic Shadows." His work has been featured in Discover, Science and U.S. News and World Report and on NPR.

Morris Galloway (CS '81) is vice president for Finance & Administration at Presbyterian College.

Michael D. Leinbach (CE '81) is the shuttle launch director for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. David E. Stein (SE '81) is vice president of marketing strategy for Convergys Corp.

David M. Hendricks (MAE '82) is commander of the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Alexandria at the New London Submarine Base.

Jeffrey B. Wright (CS '83) is manager of e-learning for Ryder System Inc. in Miami.

Michael Holloway (CS '83) is a research engineer at NASA Langley.

Mark A. Luria (CE '83) is a project executive for Gilbane, a full-service construction and real estate development company in Laurel, Md.

Mark J. Sykes (ChE '85) is a supervisory special agent with the FBI's Internet Fraud Complaint Center in Morgantown, W.Va.

John B. Koch (SE '85, '86) is president of the southeast region for Alltel, an integrated communications provider. He resides in Charlotte, N.C.

Steve D. Parker (EE '87) is an associate with the law firm of Davis & Harmon.

Michael R. Matthews (CE '89) is chairman of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport Authority. He is the principal of Matthews Development Co., a Charlottesville-based real estate development and consulting firm.

Image of Patrick ForresterAstronaut Patrick G. Forrester (MAE '89) was a mission specialist aboard the STS-105 Discovery that rendezvoused with the space station from August 10­22. It was NASA's 11th mission to this outpost. "I thought the experience at U.Va. was wonderful," Forrester said recently. "The faculty is superb and the education is world-class." Forrester visited students in James McDaniel's class in November.

1990s

Robin L. Dillon (SE '93) is an assistant professor of information systems at Georgetown University.

Michelle Gaudett-Koul (SE '93, ¹97) is an assistant professor at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Mainak H. "Miku" Mehta (SE '93) is an associate with the firm of Sughrue Mion Zinn MacPeak & Seas, PLLC.

Nipun Agarwal (CS '94) is on the technical staff at Oracle Corp. in Redwood Shores, Calif.

Duane Gabor (SE '94) is senior development manager for Vibrant Solutions, a leading vendor of network cost and revenue management software.

Kenneth P. Hinckley (CS '94, '97) is employed by Microsoft. He was recently mentioned in an article in the Wall Street Journal.

Simone L. Pollard (ChE '94) received an MBA from the University of Michigan. She works as a consultant in New York.

Jonathan J. Alboum (SE '95) is a senior consultant for Ventera in Tysons Corner, Va.

Gregory J. Eversmeyer (CS '95) is a programmer/analyst for Mindback Inc. He resides in Sterling, Va.

 

 

Allison L. Powell (CS, '95, '01) received the ASIST UMI Doctoral Dissertation Award from the American Society for Information Science and Technology. Her adviser was James C. French. She is employed by the Corporation for National Research Initiatives in Reston, Va.

Rakesh Radhakrishnan (ChE '95) received a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech and is a postdoctoral research associate at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.

Eric Anderson (Aero '97) is co-founder, president and chief executive officer of Space Adventures, an Arlington, Va., travel agency that sells the final frontier as a vacation destination. The company was involved in the recent space flight taken by California millionaire Dennis Tito. He was featured in a December Washington Post magazine story on space travel.

Bertina M. Lee (CS '99) was featured in a recent Richmond Times-Dispatch article about the World Kick Boxing Association's World Games. She qualified by placing second in her weight class at the State Games at Fort Lee, Va. She is employed with Dominion Resources Inc.

Nathan Neckel (Engr. Sci. '99) completed his MS in bioengineering at Syracuse University and is now a staff neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Alessa Parde (SE '99) and David Rizzi (SE '99) were married in the University Chapel in May 2001. The couple was featured in a May Washington Post article exploring the digital approach they took to wedding planning.

Image of Lorin CassidyLorin E. Cassidy, (ME '00) is a member of the Ford Motor Co.'s Leadership Development Program. Lorin is on a nine-month assignment at Ford's Land Rover Division in England that involves engineering, manufacturing and sales. Lorin is one of three former co-op students currently in the Leadership Development Program at Ford.

James P. Henry (CE '00) is a project engineer with Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. in Richmond, Va.

Vineet K. Aggarwall (CS '01) is a software engineer for Mantas Inc. in Fairfax, Va.

1930s

William W. Harrison (Engineering '37) of Virginia Beach died in March 2001. Mr. Harrison served as a member of U.Va.'s Board of Visitors and was president of the Alumni Association and the Virginia Student Aid Foundation.

1950s

Randolph "Randy" S. Nunnally (CE '53) of Albuquerque, N.M., died in March 2001. He was a veteran of the space program.

1960s

Frank M. Bray Sr. (ChE '63) of Coeburn, Va., died in January 2001. His career highlights include inventions and innovations in chemical manufacturing processes, management and oil and gas exploration.

Richard J. Chambliss, Jr. (EE '69) of Baltimore, Md. died in August 2001.

1980s

Craig E. Morris (EE '83) of Atlanta, Ga. died in August 2001.

Craig Hedberg (CE '83, '86) of Oakton, Va., died in November 2000.

Patrick S. Murphy (CS '87) of Millburn, N.J., died September 11 in the World Trade Center attack. He was vice president of information and technology at Marsh & McLellan.

Special Friends:

Hudson Lane Dudley (BEE '49) of Mount Pleasant, SC died in June 2001. Mr. Dudley served as a member of VEF's Board of Directors from 1968­1970 as Vice President and 1971­1972 as President.

Charles R. Holcomb (CE '73, '76) of Roanoke, Va., died in August 2001. He was former president of the Virginia Engineering Foundation.

Beauregard R. S. Payne Sr. of Charlottesville, Va., died in August 2001. He was a longtime employee of the Engineering School. His family gratefully acknowledges all expressions of sympathy shown to them during their bereavement.

Fred Rosi, retired adjunct faculty with MSE, died in May 2001. His legacy to the school is the Fred D. Rosi Fellowship in Materials Science, awarded yearly to graduate students.
