1950s
Robert L. Sackheim, (ChE '59) assistant center director
and chief engineer for space propulsion at the NASA Marshall Space
Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., has been awarded a 2003 Presidential
Rank Award for Meritorious Executives - one of the highest honors
for government service work. He was among a group of federal senior
executives recently honored in Washington.
The Presidential Rank Award is a prestigious honor given to a select
group of senior federal executives who have provided exceptional
service to the American people over an extended period of time.

Executives who have demonstrated strength, integrity, industry
and commitment to the public trust are nominated for the award by
the head of their agencies. A panel of private citizens evaluates
the candidates, selecting only those who, through their personal
conduct and results-oriented leadership, qualify for referral to
the President, who makes the final designation.

1960s
Michael N. Bishara (Aero '69) retired from the service with
the State of Virginia. He is actively involved with aviation and
aviation history.
David A. Kettler (EE '67, '70, '71) was awarded a 2004 Distinguished
Alumni Award from the Virginia Engineering Foundation.

| James M. Trice Jr. (ChE '63), the
first African-American to earn a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering,
is a member of President John T. Casteen's Commission on Diversity
and Equity, an entity convened this summer to assess the quality of
the student experience with special attention to the experiences of
women and minorities. Trice was once the Halsey Distinguished Visiting
Professor in ChE and a visiting lecturer in STS and he also served
as minority adviser to the dean and on the Virginia Engineering Foundation
board. |

1970s
Lt. Gen. Robert Flowers (CE '76) who served as chief
of engineers and commanding general of the

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has been
named CEO of Washington-based HNTB Federal Services Corp., a new subsidiary
of The HNTB Companies. The company will seek to address "the
government's facility, infrastructure and security needs." |
Douglas E. Jackson (Nuc '72) merged his patent law practice
with the law firm of Stitles & Harbison, a Southeast regional
business and litigation firm.
1980s
Loren D. Bloomberg (SIE '89) is a senior transportation engineer
at CH2M Hill. He and his wife and two children live in El Cerrito,
Calif.
Thomas F. P. Enochs (ME '86) has been named vice president
of professional services by Seattle-based Qpass, which describes
itself as "the preferred provider of mobile commerce software."

| Charles Romine (Applied Math '86)
works in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)
as the DOE Representative of the National Science and Technology Council
(NSTC). His work centers on information technology, with emphasis
on high-end computing and cybersecurity.
Mark J. Sykes (ChE '85) is a special agent for the FBI's
Richmond division. He serves as the program coordinator for the
Richmond division's cybercrime, violent crime, drug and organized
crime and undercover programs and the division's evidence response
team and computer analysis response team.
Charles D. Tereck (ChE '85) is vice president and a member
of the board of directors of Katzen International Inc. in Cincinnati,
Ohio. The company licenses process technology and provides engineering
services worldwide in the area of ethanol production.
David J. Williamson Jr. (CS '82) is president and co-founder
of the Southwest Virginia chapter of the Project Management

Jill S. Tietjen (Applied Math '76) was awarded
a 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Virginia Engineering Foundation
in honor of the work she does encouraging young people, especially
women, to pursue engineering. She also recently received the 2004
Tau Beta Pi Distinguished Alumna award, given in recognition of an
alumnus who demonstrates adherence to the ideals of Tau Beta Pi (integrity,
breadth of interest, adaptability, and unselfish activity) and to
fostering a spirit of liberal culture on local, national, and international
scales. |

1990s
Barry Adams (ME '96) works for the Department of Defense
Space and Missile Systems Center in Los Angeles, developing national
security satellite sensors and launch vehicles.
Adriane Davis (SIE '99) is a 2004 recipient of a National
Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program fellowship.
She is a doctoral student in computer information systems at Georgia
State University, researching brain-computer interfaces.

L. Finnegan (SIE '91) is vice president of the Small Business

Credit Card division with Capital One Financial Corporation.
John Kros (SIE '97) is an assistant professor of decision
sciences in the College of Business at East Carolina University.
Leland D. Melvin (MSE '91) was awarded the 2004 Young Engineering
Graduate Award from the Virginia Engineering Foundation.
Kirsten Oleson (CE '96) is enrolled at Stanford University's
Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources. Her research
centers on the environmental linkages of macroeconomic policy reforms.
Patricia T. Waugh (Aero '90) is a senior engineer with Boeing.

Engineering
Alum is NASA's Newest Astronaut Candidate
Thomas H. Marshburn (Engr. Physics '84) is one of NASA's
newest astronaut candidates. Marshburn, a physician, worked as a
flight surgeon at NASA's Johnson Space Center. The 43-year-old was
born in North Carolina and has two master's degrees - one from U.Va.
and another from the University of Texas Medical Branch. He received
his doctorate degree from Wake Forest University and has since served
as the lead crew surgeon for the seventh expedition to the International
Space Station.

2000s
Matthew Axtell (LAW '02) won the Levinson Prize from the Society
for the History of Technology for "the best unpublished work
by a new entrant to the field" of history of technology. His
paper is on the James River and Kanawha Canal. The prize was awarded
at the Society for the History of Technology meeting in Amsterdam,
Netherlands.

Axtell wrote the first draft of the paper while he was
a student at U.Va., studying the history of technology and environment
with Professor Edmund Russell. He now works for the Army Corps of
Engineers as an attorney.
Russell Holt (CE '03) works as a civil engineer in the traffic
design section of the Rhode Island Department
|
of Transportation. He serves on the membership committee
of the Intelligent Transportation Society of Rhode Island.
Satish C. Kartha (SIE '03) is working for Applied Materials
as a test engineer.
Steven Sklad (CE '00) works for Applied Biosystems, a biotech
company.

1930s
Paul
B. Krebs (CE '30)
died in June. He was retired from Paul B. Krebs & Associates
Inc., a Birmingham, Ala., architectural/engineering firm where he
was owner and then president for almost 40 years. A native of Birmingham,
he received his B.S. degree in civil engineering in 1930 and was
a member of the Theta Tau and Tau Beta Pi national engineering scholastic
honor societies.
He was a strong advocate of technical competence by those who offer
consulting services in the water and wastewater field. He served
on an Engineering School scholarship committee and established and
funded an academic scholarship at the School for aspiring young
engineering students. During his life he received many honors and
recognition for his contributions to the field of civil engineering.At
U.Va., he was a member of the Raven Society and the Jefferson Society.
Neal
O. Wade Jr. (CE '49) died in July. He was an Engineering School
student in 1942 before leaving school to join the Army where he
entered combat in France. He earned three battle stars, the Bronze
Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. Following discharge he returned
to school where he served as student president, a member of the
Honor Committee, a member of the Beta Fraternity, president of the
"V" Club and president of his graduating class.

He was also voted to a number of All-Star baseball teams and was
awarded the Billy Ward baseball trophy in his senior year. Following
graduation he was a member of the 13 Society, Raven Society and
the Secret 7 Society. He served on the Board of Visitors and was
president of the Alumni Association, and he won the Virginia Engineering
Foundation Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award in 1992.
Edwin E. Andrews (Engr. '30) of Richmond, Va., died in July.
William T. Temple (CE '33) of Irvington, Va., died in May.
1940s
Andrew B. Bolton Jr. (ME '49) of Charlottesville, Va., died
in December 2003. He was a marine products sales manager for Sperry
Marine and retired as president of Monticello Home Builders. He
was a member of the Charlottesville City Planning Commission.
William H. McCoy (ChE '42) of Greenville, Del., died in
January.
Keith A. Rogers (Engr. '49) of Federal Way, Wash., died
in September 2003. He worked on the Gemini B/Manned Orbital Laboratory
Program at McDonnell Douglas and as an aerospace engineer for Boeing
and a chief systems troubleshooter for NASA's Space Shuttle orbital
launch system.

1950s
James L. Dooley (ME '50) of Charlottesville, Va., died in
October 2003. He was a partner with the patent and trademark law
firm of Cushman, Darby & Cushman in Washington, D.C., before
he retired in 1994.
Jerome A. Isear (EE '51) of Salisbury, Md., died in March.
He was founder of Cavalier Energy Co., one of the largest Exxon
distributors on the Eastern Shore.
Edward J. Szczebak Sr. (EE '51) of Plano, Texas, died in
July.
1970s
Michael S. Kearney (Nuc '73) of Carlsbad, N.M., died in
May 2003. He was a program manager and consultant for Weston Solutions
Inc. He is survived by his daughter, Elisabeth R. Kearney '06.
1980s
Thomas R. Sutter (CE '81) of Newport News, Va., died in
September 2003. He was a project manager with NASA for 20 years
and a commander of the U.S. Joint Forces Command's Joint Reserve
Unit.
Matthew J. Anderson (SIE '89) of Fairfax, Va., died in November
2003. He was a partner in the federal government client group of
Accenture Corp.
1990s
Andrew T. Hatch (CS '93) of Boynton Beach Fla., died in
October 2003. He worked at Fidelity Federal Bank.
