Yu-Han J. Hsiang (’08) was the third-place winner in the 2008
Undergraduate Research and Design Symposium for her project titled “Plasmid-bearing Nanoparticles and Ultrasound-Targeted Microbubble Destruction: A Novel Technique for Therapeutic Angiogenesis.”
Vinu T. Ilakkuvan (’09) volunteered with Alternative Spring Break at the Uluru Children’s Home in India. She continued her stay in India until August to conduct research on dietary compliance of diabetic patients, through a U.Va. Harrison Undergraduate Research Award.
Udayan Shah (’08) and Lishan Mou (’08) were awarded a first-place team award in the Undergraduate Research Design Symposium for their project titled “Advanced Testing for Predicting HCV Treatment Response.”
Eliah R. Shamir (’08) was the second-place winner in the 2008 Undergraduate Research and Design Symposium for her project titled “Treating Infection by Enteroaggregative E.coli, an Emerging Diarrheal Pathogen.”
Chemical Engineering
Ana Jemec (’09) and
Eric Harshfield (’09) received a 2008 Davis “
Projects for Peace” prize from the Davis United World College Scholars Program for their project to build a sustainable slow sand filtration system in Venda, South Africa, using local materials.
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers has recognized the U.Va. Student
Chapter as one of its 15 Outstanding Chapters for 2008.
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Benjamin T. Foster (’10) received an ARCS Foundation Scholarship.
Amy J. Hearon (’08) was featured in a Virginia Transportation Research Council release about her pavements research and recent appointment to a Transportation Research Board committee that focuses on pavement construction and rehabilitation.
Hamed Khatam (’11) received a $5,000 stipend from the University of Virginia Engineering Foundation. Khatam, a graduate student of Professor Marek-Jerzy Pindera, is working on micromechanical theory for heterogeneous media, in collaboration with colleagues in Brazil. Khatam also is a teaching assistant and has maintained a 4.0 graduate student GPA. He has already published in the ASME journal “Engineering Materials and Technology” and has several other papers undergoing review or already accepted for publication.
Joyoung Lee (’07, ’11) received a best paper award for the 2008 PTV Vision Users Group Meeting in Philadelphia, May 2008. The title of his paper was “The Enhancement of Stochastic Signal Optimization Method by Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm.”
Pat Mandeville (’09) received a Clark Construction Business Minor Scholarship award. The scholarship was founded in 2006 by Clark Construction Group LLC. Led by SEAS alumni Daniel T. Montgomery (CE ’73), president, and William Talbert (CE ’70), executive vice president, Clark Construction was instrumental in establishing the 18-credit minor in 2005. The scholarship is designed to encourage civil engineering students to participate in the engineering business minor and is offered jointly by the U.Va. Engineering School and the McIntire School of Commerce.
Brian Pailes (’11) is the 2007–08 Graduate Assistant Teaching Award recipient in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Under the auspices of the Teaching Resource Center, winners of approximately 30 GTA awards of $250 are chosen annually through departments.
Charles A. Shackelford (’09), currently pursuing an engineering business minor, is a recipient of a Clark Construction Group Inc. Scholarship for 2008–09.

Electrical and Computer Engineering
Xinmin Liu ('09), a graduate student of Professor Zongli Lin, conducts research related to sensor selection, image tracking and differential geometric theory of nonlinear systems. In recognition of this research and his dedication as a teaching assistant, he was awarded a $5,000 John Bell McGaughy Fellowship.
Smitha Vasudevan (’11) received a fellowship from the University of Virginia Engineering Foundation. She works on modeling and computational simulation of nanoelectronic devices under the leadership of Assistant Professor Avik Ghosh. She has published a paper in “IEEE Sensors Journal” and has presented her work at two international conferences.
Jiajing Wang (’11) received a $6,000 William L. Ballard Jr. Fellowship. A graduate student of Assistant Professor Ben Calhoun, Wang's research focuses on the low-power and variation-tolerant digital circuit design, especially nanometer SRAM (static random access memory) design and modeling. She previously received graduate student funding from the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency, and one of her published papers recently received a “Best Student Paper Award” at the International Conference on VLSI (very-large-scale integration) Design.
Materials Science and Engineering Physics
Sami M. Al-Ghamdi (’06, ’11), advised by Professor John Scully, won a third-place Poster Award at the Mars Fontana Corrosion Engineering Division at the NACE International Corrosion Conference in 2008.
Santhana Eswaramoorthy (’08), advised by Professor James Howe, was selected as the 2008 recipient of the Gwathmey Memorial Award. Eswaramoorthy received the award for his work in surface science, the results of which were published in the journal Science.
Ashley M. Lucente (’02, ’08, advised by Professor John Scully, co-chaired the 2008 the graduate portion of the Gordon-Kenan Graduate Research Seminar at the 2008 Gordon Research Conference in Aqueous Corrosion.
John H. Macha (’11), advised by Professor John Scully, won a second-place Poster Award at the Mars Fontana Corrosion Engineering Division at the NACE International Corrosion Conference in 2008.
Nicole R. Tailleart (’11), advised by Professor John Scully, won a first-place Overall Student Poster Award at the Department of Defense Tri-service Corrosion Conference Poster Session in 2007.
Christopher Taylor (’06), co-advised by Professors Rob Kelly and Matt Neurock, won the 2008 Morris Cohen Award for outstanding graduate research in corrosion science from the Corrosion Division of the Electrochemistry Society for work he did as a student in the Engineering School.
Jen Warner (’10), advised by Professor Richard Gangloff, won best in class for her poster presented at the 2008 International Conference on Fatigue Damage in Materials.
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Jason Forman (’09), a graduate student of Assistant Professor Richard Kent, received a $5,000 John Bell McGaughy Fellowship. The fellowship recognizes Forman’s 4.0 graduate student GPA and his research on automobile safety and the biomechanics of human injury.
Roy L. Hayes Jr. (SE, MAE ’09) was awarded a Virginia Space Grant Consortium Undergraduate Research Scholarship for 2008-2009.
James R. Thompson (’08) received the 2008 Sigma Gamma Tau Ammon S. Andes Award. This award, given by the national aerospace engineering honor society, recognizes the top U.S. university aerospace engineering major.

David T. Bauer (’08), advised by Associate Professor Stephanie Guerlain, won the “Day One Best Poster Award” at the National Library of Medicine Medical Informatics Training Program Annual Meeting for his poster titled “How Physicians Perceive and Interpret Data Using Graphical and Tabular Displays.”
Roy L. Hayes Jr. (SE, MAE ’08) was awarded a Virginia Space Grant Consortium Undergraduate Research Scholarship for 2008–09.
Douglas W. Lee (’11) received a fellowship from the University of Virginia Engineering Foundation. Lee, a graduate student under Associate Professors Ellen Bass and Steve Patek, has produced four scholarly papers related to air taxi service modeling and development of tools to evaluate performance of National Airspace Systems.
Marin S. Odioso (’08) was one of three students selected to represent the University at the Universitas 21 Undergraduate Research Conference on sustainability held at the National University of Singapore. She also was the first-place winner in the 2008 Undergraduate Research and Design Symposium for her project titled “Perceptions of Congestion Charging: Lessons for U.S. Cities from London and Stockholm.”

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at U.Va. was recently awarded a $7,000 grant from the national organization in support of its outreach program
Juntos Podermos. The U.Va. student organization doubled in size in 2007.
