Research
If you are planning on going to graduate school, or just want to explore a particular field of study in more depth, it can be helpful to participate in a research project. As an underclassman, however, it may be intimidating: you don't know many professors, you haven't had much time to distinguish yourself, and you may not know precisely what you are interested in doing.
Luckily, it is not too difficult to find a professor willing to let you participate in research. The best advice for going about finding a research project is to first talk to your professors. You want to get to know them, and impress them with your abilities. You should explore the web pages of the departments that you are interested in; they will have links to the different research projects going on, and the research interests of the professors. Make sure you talk with the professor you would like to work with early; don't wait until the week before school is out if you want to do a summer project.
Remember, most professors are happy to find someone who shares their interests and wants to work with them on their projects. Go to a professor's office hours and talk about their research, even if you are not in their class.
