Dr. Haimes founded the University of Virginia’s Center for Risk Management of Engineering Systems in 1987. He previously served 17 years on the faculty of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where he was chair of the Systems Engineering Department and director of the university’s Center for Large-Scale Systems and Policy Analysis. During the 1977-78 sabbatical year, he was an AAAS/American Geophysical Union Congressional Science Fellow, joining the staff of the Executive Office of President Jimmy Carter, and later the staff of the House Science and Technology Committee. Over the years he has held several high offices as president and chair of boards of directors of professional and public service organizations. In 1998, he served as president of the Society for Risk Analysis. He has published more than 250 articles and technical papers, more than 150 of which are in archival journals and encyclopedias. He has edited or co-edited 21 volumes, and authored or co-authored six books. His most recent book is Risk Modeling, Assessment, and Management (New York: Wiley, 1998). Dr. Haimes is a fellow of seven professional societies. He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2001 Norbert Weiner from IEEE-SMC, the MCDM 1995 Georg Cantor award, the 1994 IEEE-SMC Outstanding Contribution Award and the Warren A. Hall Medal, and the Society for Risk Analysis 2000 Distinguished Achievement Award.
 
Research Interests
Yacov Haimes' research interests include risk-based decision making, multiobjective tradeoff analysis, and hierarchical analysis of large-scale systems. He has applied his research results to water resources and environmental and industrial systems.
