Dr. Carlson has served on the faculty since 1986. He has published one book and several articles and is co-editor of a book series for MIT Press on the history and sociology of technology. In addition to currently serving on the board of trustees of the Newcomen Society and the Business History Conference, he has served on the IEEE History Committee, the editorial board of IEEE Spectrum, and the executive council of the Society for the History of Technology. He has received the SHOT-IEEE Life Members Prize in Electrical History and has held fellowships at the Harvard Business School, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology at MIT.
 
Research Interests
Bernie Carlson specializes in the history of technology and business. Much of his research has focused on the creative strategies used by prominent inventors such as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and Nikola Tesla. He is currently preparing a six-volume project on technology in world history, which will be published by Oxford University Press. Bernie also consults with several high-tech firms about how to use examples from history to understand and improve research and design.
