Thomas W. Crowe
Research Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering
Ph.D., University of Virginia

Dr. Crowe has served on the faculty since 1986. He is the author or co-author of more than 40 referred publications and 80 conference proceedings papers, and has given numerous invited talks throughout the United States and Europe. Dr. Crowe has been a PI or co-PI on over $15 million of sponsored research and has advised eight doctoral dissertations and 20 Master of Science theses. Dr. Crowe and his colleagues recently received a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) award from the Army Research Office. The $6 million award is titled "The Science and Technology of Biological and Chemical Sensing at Terahertz Frequencies." Dr. Crowe also is a founder of Virginia Diodes Inc.

Research Interests
Thomas Crowe focuses on the research and development of new technologies to open the terahertz window of the electromagnetic spectrum for applications in science, national defense and commerce. The devices created by his research team have been used in over a dozen spacecraft, ranging from NASA’s Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite Microwave Limb Sounder, which has made fundamental studies of ozone depletion, through the Defense Metrological Satellite Program used by the U.S. military to monitor weather conditions around the globe. Present research is focused on making this technology more useful, more convenient and more widely available. This is being achieved through the use of greater levels of component integration, novel device and circuit technologies and innovative fabrication technologies.
