| Sean R. Agnew | | Assistant Professor, Materials Science and Engineering | | Ph.D., Northwestern University | | | | Sean Agnew joined the faculty of Materials Science and Engineering Department
at U.Va. during the summer of 2001. His
teaching and research focus broadly on issues of mechanical behavior of
materials and physical metallurgy. He has published over 25 journal articles
and proceedings papers and is a member of the Minerals, Metals, Materials Society
(TMS) and the American Materials Society
(ASM Intl.). He previously served at the Oak
Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), where he was recipient of the Eugene P. Wigner Fellowship
Award and staff scientist in the Metals and Ceramics Division working on
magnesium alloy and process development. He continues a close interaction with
ORNL through a joint faculty appointment here at U.Va. | | | | Research Interests | | Validation and development of models designed to capture the processing/structure/property relationships of advanced alloys. In particular, issues related to texture and anisotropy (e.g., formability and nondestructive evaluations). Non-cubic metals are challenging in these respects, and recent work has focused on hexagonal magnesium alloys. Structural measurements are focused on diffraction-based techniques (electron, X-ray and neutron). Traditional mechanical testing methods, nano-indentation, and ultrasonic inspection are also employed to assess mechanical behavior. | | | Sponsored Research Magnesium Alloy and Process Development (funded by: Oak Ridge National Laboratory)
