Michael B. Lawrence
Associate Professor, Biomedical Engineering
Ph.D., Rice University

Dr. Lawrence has served on the University of Virginia faculty since 1994. Before that, he worked at Pharmacia-Upjohn, where he developed high-throughput assays for screening chemical libraries for novel anti-inflammatory agents. He has published 24 peer-reviewed articles and three book chapters.

Research Interests
Michael Lawrence's specialties are transport phenomena, and cell and biomolecular adhesion. His research interests include molecular mechanics of biospecific adhesion of eucaryotic cells and receptor systems. Antagonism of leukocyte adhesion to the blood vessel wall represents a promising avenue for future therapeutic anti-inflammatory drugs, combining potency with specificity of action. Additionally, his lab group works on applications of cell adhesion receptor biochemistry to drug and gene delivery.
