John L. Hudson
Wills Johnson Professor of Chemical Engineering
Ph.D., Northwestern University

Dr. Hudson has served on the University of Virginia faculty since 1975 and as chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering from 1975 to 1985. He was a member of the Center for Advanced Studies until 1986 and is now a member of the Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering. He has received the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Research Award and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' R.H. Wilhelm Award. He is an honorary professor at East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai. Before joining the U.Va. faculty, he taught at the University of Illinois and managed the Division of Air Pollution Control for the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Research Interests
John Hudson's research focuses on chemical reactor dynamics, with an emphasis on periodic and chaotic oscillatory behavior and on spatiotemporal patterns in chemically reacting systems. He combines experimental results from chemical reactors with theories from nonlinear dynamics. His team investigates both (electro)catalytic reactions and metal dissolution, and explores the fundamental nature of the patterns and the effects on overall reaction rate. They also investigate how control and forcing of the reactions can lead to desired conditions such as optimization of reaction rate. Their work involves both experiments and mathematical modeling. They also are applying the fundamental studies to several areas, including fuel cells, nanoscale patterning of metals, and localized corrosion of metals.
