| James F. Groves | | Assistant Professor, Materials Science and Engineering | | Ph.D., University of Virginia | | | Since 1998, Dr. Groves has been associate director of the University of Virginia’s Institute for Microelectronics, and Director of Research and Industrial Programs for the School of Engineering and Applied Science. He is director of the engineering school’s distance learning initiative, the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program, and has served since 2000 as the assistant director of U.Va.’s Center for Nanoscopic Materials Design, a materials research science and engineering center for the National Science Foundation. He has produced 20 publications and holds two U.S. patents. Dr. Groves graduated from Duke University in 1990 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering and materials science. He earned an M.S. in mechanical and aerospace engineering in 1992 and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering in 1998 from the U.Va. His Ph.D. was titled "Directed Vapor Deposition."
| | | | Research Interests | | James Groves’ research seeks to contribute unique materials synthesis capabilities and understanding to the vapor deposition community. It generates fundamental vapor deposition knowledge and applies that understanding to the creation of novel high-performance coatings. His research develops novel material processing capabilities that build upon unique insights into physical vapor deposition processes. Through both experimental and modeling studies of vapor deposition, these efforts contribute to the materials community’s understanding of coating synthesis for various applications. | | |
