George T. Gillies
Research Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Ph.D., University of Virginia

Dr. Gillies has served on the faculty since 1985. He has published 300 technical reports and abstracts, 125 journal papers, 20 book chapters and two books. He is the North American editor of Reports on Progress in Physics. In 2000, Gillies was made a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (Great Britain). Before joining the U.Va. faculty, he worked as a development staff member for the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge Complex in Tennessee, and as a physicist for the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Paris.

Research Interests
George Gillies' research interests include the design of novel neurosurgical instrumentation systems, including magnetic stereotactic devices.  He also has ongoing projects in many aspects of biomedical engineering, biomechanics and biophysics.  Other areas of interest include rotating machinery and controls, gravitational physics, thermal and electrical metrology, and satellite-based tests of fundamental physical laws.
