Giorgio Carta
Professor, Chemical Engineering
Ph.D., University of Delaware

Dr. Carta has served on the University of Virginia faculty since 1984. He has authored or co-authored over 80 articles in refereed journals and is a co-author of Section 16 of the seventh edition of Perry's Chemical Engineers Handbook. He also holds two U.S. patents in the areas of separation technology and biochemical and engineering. He has served as a consultant for various industrial companies and as a member of the organizing committee of the International Symposium, Exhibit and Workshop on Preparative and Process Chromatography, annually since 1997. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society, and the International Adsorption Society, and a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Research Interests
Giorgio Carta's specialties include mass transfer and separation engineering with an emphasis on applications in biotechnology and pharmaceutical manufacturing. His current research focuses on experimental characterization of absorbents and ion exchangers, development of models to describe mass transfer in adsorbents, development of ion-exchange matrices based on synthetic polymer hydrogels, scale-up and optimization of chromatography, enzyme reactor engineering, and biocatalysis within mobilized cells and immobilized enzymes.
