A shared interest in conducting and funding transformational engineering research makes Micron and the Micron Foundation natural partners with the U.Va. School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS).

Since 2006, Micron, one of the world’s leading providers of advanced semiconductors, and SEAS have partnered to launch collaborative projects with the Darden School of Business, curriculum advancements for the Chemical Engineering Department and unique nanotechnology research.

“As we continued to forge our relationship, we came to realize that there were synergies between our organizations,” says Amy Harris, manager of university and academic relations at Micron.

Harris is excited about Micron’s involvement in SEAS’ PRODUCED in Virginia program — a program that seeks to make undergraduate engineering education available at a distance in communities around Virginia. The PRODUCED program will help Virginia expand the pipeline of engineering professionals and provide the semiconductor industry an additional source for highly skilled engineers.

This year, Micron is helping support research and development symposiums, classroom presentations, career development opportunities and various other programs, including the Science, Technology and Policy Internship Program.

“Thanks to support from Micron,” says Ed Russell, associate professor in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society and director of the internship program, “we can send an intern to Washington, D.C., to work with a top-level policy maker for 10 weeks during the summer, which furthers our goal of educating the next generation of leaders in science and technology policy.”
