U.Va. and Virginia Community College System Engineering Leaders Meet to Coordinate Academic Programs

June 12, 2009

On Friday June 12th, engineering leaders from the University of Virginia and thirteen of Virginia’s community colleges met to discuss ways to further coordination and cooperation between their respective programs.

During the past two years the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Virginia Community College System have partnered to increase access to engineering undergraduate education for residents of the Commonwealth.  Those efforts are largely responsible for the increase in the number of Virginia community colleges offering access to Associate degrees in engineering, from eight in 2007 to eighteen in 2009.

The meeting on June 12th was focused upon ensuring coordinated, high quality learning opportunities for students in the Commonwealth studying engineering at the undergraduate level.  Thirty five faculty members from U.Va. and the participating VCCS schools exchanged information about math, chemistry, physics, and engineering courses taught as part of Associate degree programs in engineering and taught during the first two years of U.Va.’s undergraduate engineering program.

This meeting was the first in recent memory between faculty from U.Va.’s engineering school and engineering programs at VCCS institutions. The meeting was sparked by the ongoing development of the Engineers PRODUCED in Virginia program, a cooperative venture of U.Va. engineering and the Virginia Community College System.

The agenda and informational documents for the June 12th coordination workshop can be found here.
