Through “GEMS,” or Girls Excited about Math and Science, U.Va. Engineering School students are helping to close the gap between males and females when it comes to engineering and the sciences.
Dedicated to boosting middle school girls´ self-esteem and guiding them toward futures in these disciplines, GEMS participants serve as mentors to sixth through eighth-grade girls in local schools and lead them in hands-on math and science experiments and activities to help girls stay interested in these fields during the critical middle school years.
Past GEMS activities have included making paper airplanes, making GakTM, solving logic puzzles and even learning about liquid nitrogen.
