A
device co-invented by Robert G. Kelly, an Engineering School
professor and expert on corrosion, will provide the Virginia
Department of Transportation with key information on the structural
health of bridges.
In April, the first of four devices were installed in the
New Pleasant Valley interchange bridge. The ECI-1 monitors
the condition of reinforced steel. The device is buried
in the bridge's concrete and will provide information on
what's happening inside the bridge for years to come.
