University of Virginia Professor Recognized as
Outstanding New Faculty Member in Transportation
The Council of University
Transportation Centers recognized Dr. Brian L. Smith, an Assistant Professor of
Civil Engineering at the University of Virginia, as the outstanding new faculty
member in transportation for 2003.
Dr.
Smith was recognized for his achievements in transportation research, his record
as an excellent teacher, and his contributions to professional engineering organizations.
Dr. Smith is nationally regarded as a leader in infrastructure management
and information technology in civil engineering. As the university director of
the Smart Travel Laboratory, he guides a $1.5 million annual research program
focused on mitigating congestion and providing more reliable transportation services.
To date, he has authored 35 papers in academic journals. Dr. Smith currently serves
on three Transportation Research Board committees focusing on the application
of information systems and technology to transportation operations. He is also
a member of ARTBA's Research and Education Division.
As a teacher, Dr. Smith
has focused on accelerating the use of advanced information technology in the
classroom. His innovation in this area has led to his selection as a University
of Virginia Teaching Fellow and as the recipient of the 2003 Civil Engineering
Teaching Award.
Prior
to joining the faculty of the University of Virginia, Dr. Smith was a research
scientist at the Virginia Transportation Research Council. Dr. Smith received
his B.S. from Virginia Tech, and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He
resides in Charlottesville with his wife, Michelle, and his daughter, Michaela.

transportation research centers in the United States.
