What is required to apply for admission to the Engineering School?
We must have a completed application, the application fee, completed essay questions as
required by each program, official GRE general exam scores, official TOEFL or IELTS scores
for applicants whose native language is not English, three letters of recommendation, and
official transcripts from all post-high school education. The applicant must have a
baccalaureate degree from a recognized college or university. We can review the application
with unofficial transcripts, but an offer of admission will be contingent on receipt of official
scores and transcripts.
What are the application and financial aid deadlines?
On-grounds masters and Ph.D. students: Admission Committees review
applications received by January 15 for admission in the Fall
term and award financial aid for the next academic year. Therefore, if you wish to be
considered for assistantships or fellowships you should apply by January 15 for Fall
admission. Occasionally assistantships may become available beginning in the spring or summer
term as current students graduate, but most funding is committed in the spring for the next
academic year. If you do not wish to apply for financial aid, the deadline for receipt of
applications from U.S. citizens and permanent residents is one month prior to the beginning
of the term. International students must apply 5 months prior to the beginning of the term
as extra time is needed for the International Student Office review and processing of
immigration documents.
Off-grounds masters programs: Please visit their web site for
information about deadlines.
What test scores are required?
Each candidate must submit official scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) general
exam. No subject exams are required. Our ETS Institution Code is 5836. All applicants
whose native language is not English must also submit official scores from the Test of
Spoken English (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.
This is required even if you attended a U.S. institution.
How can I pay the application fee?
The application fee may be paid on-line by VISA or Mastercard. You may also pay by
check or money order mailed directly to the Graduate Studies Office. In order to ensure
that the payment is credited to the correct application, please write your full name and
birth date on the check. After payment is credited to your application, your application
status will show payment received and you will be able to submit your application. We
do not waive the application fee.
Can I apply to more than one program at a time?
Yes, you may apply to two programs with one application fee. Complete and submit
your first application. When you are ready to submit the second application, please
contact us at
seas-grad-admission@virginia.edu for assistance. If you have started
multiple applications, you must be specific about which you intend to submit as your
second application.
Can I change my application to a different program or term after it has been submitted?
You cannot change your application after it has been submitted, but we can help.
Please contact us at seas-grad-admission@virginia.edu.
If I am not longer interested or I am denied admission, will you refund my application fee?
No, the application fee is non-refundable.
If I am an international student transferring from another U.S. institution, what do I need to provide?
At least one of your three letters of recommendation should be from a faculty member at
your current institution.
I am an international student who does not have the financial resources to finance my education. I
will be dependent on the award of financial aid. How do I indicate this?
All applicants who will require visa sponsorship from the University will be asked to provide evidence of financial support after an offer for admission is made. If you do not have the financial resources to fund your education in the United States, you may indicate that to us on a financial guarantee form submitted after an offer of admission is made.
I cannot find the application I want for the Spring or Summer Term.
Some programs admit students only in the Fall term, so only one application is available for some
departments. If you have any questions pertaining to a specific program and term, please contact the
Graduate Director of the program.
