U.Va. Alum Appointed as New Associate Dean of Development

Nancy J. Cable, Ph.D., Vice President and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Davidson College (N.C.), will join the University of Virginia in April as the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) Associate Dean for Development and Virginia Engineering Foundation Vice President for Development.

"This is an extraordinary time in the life of the Engineering School," Cable said. "Recognition of the importance of science and engineering is quite high; the faculty, students and staff are excellent; the alumni are loyal and interested in the School; and support from the University administration is strong. I am thrilled to join U.Va. in this capacity and am eager to take on the challenges ahead," she added.

The timing of Cable's arrival coincides with recent changes in the volunteer structures for the School. "After careful consideration and dialogue, the SEAS Trustees organization has been created," said Doug Garson, President of SEAS Trustees. "This organization will serve as the backbone of support for the Engineering School-through strategic planning, development, and promotion-and will serve as the governing body of the Virginia Engineering Foundation," he explained. "We are very fortunate to have a professional of Cable's stature join us as we begin this exciting new venture in support of the Engineering School. We conducted an extensive, nationwide search and in the end we found in Nancy Cable the outstanding qualities of enthusiasm, charisma, and development expertise we need to go forth with success in the challenging times ahead," Garson said.

Cable's professional experience includes a comprehensive background in admissions, recruitment, financial aid, marketing, publications, and development. Her work at Davidson has helped to sustain the college's high academic standards and to enhance the size, quality and diversity of the applicant pool and enrolling students.

Prior to her position at Davidson, Cable was Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students at Guilford College (N.C.), and before that she was Associate Dean and Dean of Students and later Director of the Career Development Center and Graduate School Advisor at Denison University (Ohio).

Cable is a member of the Association of American Colleges, the Southern Consortium of Admission Deans, and the selection team for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and is an invited member of the College Board. She has been a consultant on admissions, financial aid and development to other higher-education institutions, and has spoken nationally on the college admission process and issues in higher education.

She was named one of 40 national "Young Leaders in Higher Education" in the January-February 1998 issue of Change magazine. She is a Phi Beta Kappa and cum laude graduate in history from Marietta College (Ohio) and received her master's degree in student personnel services in higher education from the University of Vermont. She received her doctorate in educational history from the University of Virginia in 1984, during which time she worked as an assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. She is a 1997 graduate of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education Institute for Educational Management.

Cable currently serves as a Board of Trustees member at the Asheville School and the Cannon School (both in N.C.).

As Associate Dean of Development and head of the Virginia Engineering Foundation, Cable will work for the Dean of the Engineering School, which will allow for an improved blending of academic and development efforts. Jim Aylor, Interim Dean of the School, is enthusiastic about collaborating with Cable: "She is the person we need for the work at hand and I look forward to working with her."

Cable shares Aylor's enthusiasm for collaboration. "I am excited about the opportunities to work with the great alumni and faculty of this institution on such worthy tasks, working together to outline the needs of the School at this critically important time in its history," she said. "I especially look forward to engaging with individuals and organizations who want to work to enhance and sustain the quality of education and research at the School and the University."

Cable will join the University in late April.
