Program Overview:

K—12 Teachers: Want to bring the latest technological advances to your classrooms?

Conduct Research in Nanotechnology at UVA!

The Research Experiences for Teachers component of the UVa MRSEC Center for Nanoscopic Materials Design is committed to providing opportunities for interested teachers from the local Charlottesville, Virginia area to learn more about the field of materials science and to develop nanotechnology-based lessons and labs that they can take back with them into the classroom. Our commitment to area science and mathematics teachers includes opportunities for paid summer research and pedagogical work with the MRSEC as well as recruitment for attendance at outreach-related seminars, workshops, and conferences.

As part of this National Science Foundation sponsored program, each summer, MRSEC faculty select interested area teachers to join them in their labs for an intensive course of collaborative research and study. Teacher-participants work alongside faculty and MRSEC graduate students, potentially collaborating with the Summer Research Experience for Undergraduate participants as well, directly contributing to cutting-edge nanotechnology research and developing teaching modules based on their lab experience which they can take back into their classrooms for introducing this field of study to their students. RET participants spend six to eight weeks as full-time research scientists with the MRSEC, and are paid a stipend for their participation.
