PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAMS: SWE Weekend Visit
As part of SWE (Society of Women Engineers), a student-run organization, initiative to increase the involvement of women in the fields of science and technology, the Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites the female junior and senior high school students to spend a weekend exploring majors and careers in engineering. The program includes informative speakers and hands-on activities to heighten interest in technology-related fields.
Participants are housed in dormitories so that they can experience university life inside and outside of the School of Engineering. Throughout the weekend, the students are involved in activities with focus on the nine different engineering disciplines offered at UVA. Participants have a chance to interact with current engineering students and faculty as well as other female, high school students from around the state of Virginia.
The High School Visitation Weekend is traditionally held on the last weekend of February, except in 2003, as a part of the Engineering Open House. The applications for the weekend event are mailed out to the Virginia secondary schools in early January. A small fee is requested to cover the activities, meals and accommodations.
For more information, you can contact the Center for Diversity in Engineering programs or the SWE program coordinator.
