History
The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (BHSSC) is a free, academic program of The Harris Foundation.
The foundation takes an active role in shaping education in students in middle and high school through college.
Science, mathematics and engineering are critical to society’s infrastructure for the 21st century. Preserving
that future requires an investment in our youth today. This camp program was developed as a collaborative effort
of the Harris Foundation, the Houston Independent School District, the University of Houston (UH) and the Southwestern
Oklahoma State University (SWOSU), designed to support economically and/or socially disadvantaged students with limited
opportunities. This year the foundation has teamed with the ExxonMobil Foundation to increase the impact and expand the
reach of the program to twenty (20) campuses nationally.
Purpose
The Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp is to designed instill an engineering interest into kids at an early age to
make up for the lack of interest in the engineering field. The camp will accomplish this by entertaining and educating
children entering grades six through eight. The kids can look forward to two weeks full of interactive activties and
classes with some of the universities professors. Throughout the week the kids will be exposed to different branches of
engineering ranging from aerospace engineering to mechanical engineering.
