History
The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp (EMBHSSC) is a national academic outreach program sponsored
by the Harris Foundation and ExxonMobil. The foundation's active sponsorship is driven by the recognition that proficiency
in science, mathematics and engineering is critical to meeting the evolving challenges of the 21st century, and developing
those proficiencies requires early intervention and investment in our youth's education. Initially, the camp program was a
collaborative effort of the Harris Foundation, the Houston Independent School District, the University of Houston (UH) and the
Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU), and designed to support the educational development of economically
and/or socially disadvantaged students; it is now offered at thirty universities across the United States.
Purpose
The goal of U.Va.'s Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp is to instill an interest in engineering
among middle school students, defined as rising sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Participants will enjoy two weeks
full of interactive activities and classes with U.Va.'s professors and graduate students from the School of Engineering and
Applied Sciences which will introduce them to various disciplines, including aerospace, electrical, materials, and mechanical engineering.
