Outstanding Student Award Presentation Speech 2009

Vinu T. Ilakkuvan

    "Vinu Ilakkuvan comes to us from Westwood High School in Austin, Texas. She has chosen to major in Biomedical Engineering and to also major in Economics and presently has a GPA of 3.85! Her leadership and service activities are quite extensive and diverse. She has served as the publicity chair and co-president of the Hindu Student Council. She was the associate editor of the Cavalier Daily. She has served as the outreach co-chair and vice-chair of the University Guide Service. She has been chair of the Academical Village Enhancement Committee. She was a volunteer in the Alternate Spring Break, India - at the Uluru Children’s Home. And, she is a member of Sitare – an Indian classical dance group.

    She has worked in a number of different capacities that include: an internship at the Center for Science, Technology, and Congress at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, assistant to the director of the Engineering School’s Science and Technology Policy Internship Program, and most recently she has received research funding from the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance and the Harrison Undergraduate Research funding program to do biomedical related research.

    Her success as an exceptional scholar has been recognized by the following. She is a Rodman Scholar, she received a Feature Writing Award from the Virginia Press Association, and she is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society. She was a peer nominated third year excellence dinner attendee, received University of Virginia Intermediate Honors, and was elected to the Raven Society and Tau Beta Pi. She is an Elsie Cabell Endowed Scholarship recipient, a University of Virginia nominee for the Truman Scholarship, and a Lawn resident.

    We are very proud of this young woman and are pleased to present the first of this year’s SEAS Outstanding Student Awards to Ms. Vinu T. Ilakkuvan.
