Alfred C. Weaver
To periodically award individuals, who have given generously of their time and talent to the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the University of Virginia Engineering Foundation.
After receiving his PhD degree in Computer Science at the University of Illinois in 1976, Alf joined the faculty at the School of Engineering and Applied Science and has since worked tirelessly in service to his department, his school , his university, and his community.
Initially a faculty member in the joint department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, Alf took on the duty of interim chair of the newly formed Department of Computer Science as the most junior associate professor in the department and for three years spent his energy and time making the newly formed department a success with a solid foundation and well established connections with the rest of the Engineering School and the University.
He is a gifted teacher and prolific researcher having taught 22 courses within the engineering school and having supervised 60 plus graduate students in sponsored research programs worth in excess of $20 million dollars.
He has served on 32 School and University committees…to mention a few…the School’s and University’s promotion and tenure committees, three department chairman search committees, the University’s Faculty Senate, and the Faculty Forum for Scientific Research.
Alf has brought visibility and respect to his department and school through his active leadership in professional activities. He was an Association for Computing Machinery National Lecturer having been invited to speak at 19 meetings and 26 colloquia and has given 42 technical tutorials. He has served in various capacities on organizing committees and technical program committees for 52 conferences and was the president of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society and is a Fellow of the IEEE.
He is deeply involved in service to the community with his church through programs that reach out and help feed the hungry and clothe the needy, that help to break the cycle of poverty by providing scholarships to Piedmont Community College for low income students, and he participates in the local Habitat for Humanity program. To quote Alf, “Technology is important, but not more important than people.”
To quote one of Alf’s colleagues, “Alf Weaver is the person we all want to know and all want to be like.”…and tonight, the School of Engineering and Applied Science wishes to show its thanks and appreciation by awarding a 2008 Distinguished Service Award to Professor Alfred C. Weaver.
