Michael N. Garrett
An award to graduates of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, who through his/her career and service to the University, state, and/or nation have brought recognition to the University of Virginia and to themselves as individuals.
Mike received his Bachelor’s degree from the School of Engineering and Applied Science in Aerospace Engineering in 1979 and in 1997 graduated from the Executive Program of the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia.
He began his career at the Douglas Aircraft Division of McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach, CA as an engineer working on aerodynamics, noise, weights, propulsion, fuels, reliability and systems engineering activities for their commercial airplanes.
While at Douglas Aircraft, he also managed Twinjet Technical and Product Marketing.
Prior to the Douglas merger with Boeing in 1997, Mike had become the director of airplane performance and systems engineering for all Douglas commercial products.
In 1998 he moved to Seattle to become airplane performance and propulsion director for Boeing commercial airplanes and in 1999, he accepted the position of next-generation 737 chief project engineer.
In 2001, Mike was named director, marketing management-airplane programs and was responsible for brand management and product marketing.
He has been the director of engineering for the Fabrication Division in Auburn, WA and presently he is the director – airplane configuration, integration and performance for Boeing commercial airplanes.
Let me finally add that he is one hell-of-a bicycle rider also, having ridden his bike across this great country!
Mike has retained a very active interest in our School and has provided advice and insight into the aerospace program for many years and regularly visits with faculty and student groups.
All of us at the School of Engineering and Applied Science are extremely proud that Mike attended our school and that he has achieved such success in the aero industry. We are indeed honored to present this year’s School of Engineering and Applied Science Distinguished Alumni Award to Michael N. Garrett.
