What Is BRIDGE?
BRIDGE is an intensive six-week summer program, designed to assist incoming first-year minority students in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Through participation in BRIDGE, students will receive instruction in the difficult subjects that are usually offered during the fall semester. Participants will also gain first-hand experience about college life. While minority students are targeted for this program, participation is open to all accepted incoming first-year students.
During the program, students will live in university housing and complete three university courses for credit such as: Calculus I (APMA 109), Science, Technology and Society (STS 101), and Chemistry I Lab (CHEM 141L). In addition, BRIDGE participants will receive instruction in academic survival skills, personal and professional development, and participate in an introductory seminar in computer science. Time is also provided for recreational and social activities.
How Can BRIDGE Benefit Me?
Students who participate in BRIDGE will likely improve their GPA during their first year at UVA. Since the engineering curriculum tends to be quite challenging, the completion of three courses during the summer allows BRIDGE students the option of either taking fewer credit hours or taking additional electives during the fall semester.
What if I Have Trouble With the Course Work?
The summer BRIDGE students attend mandatory tutorial sessions. The tutors are provided for the Calculus, STS, and Chemistry courses. The BRIDGE tutors provide all students with supplementary problems and exercises to solve in addition to assisting students who are having difficulty in course work. Additionally, BRIDGE participants that fulfill all program requirements during the first two semesters at UVa will earn a total of $1,000 to offset the cost of tuition;
- $500 paid at the completion of the summer program
- $250 paid during Fall 2011
- $250 paid during Spring 2012

Associated Costs:
The School of Engineering and Applied Science, with corporate support, covers the tuition, housing, and dining fees for most students enrolled in the program. Non need-based students may be charged a portion of the costs. All students must pay for the supplies, souvenirs and personal items they may need during the summer. Applicants will be advised of any costs within a week after being selected.
Tell Me More About Housing...
All students will reside on Grounds in University housing for the duration of the program. Females are housed on the second floor of the dormitory and males are housed on the first floor. There are two female and two male counselors who reside in the dorm with the students and serve as resident advisors.
Are Other Activities Planned?
In addition to a rigorous academic schedule, the summer BRIDGE students are required to attend various career and academic activities. These activities typically include corporate field trips, honor and judiciary orientations, library tours, and guest speakers.
