Surface & Thin Film Research Experience for Undergraduates (STF-REU)

Program Overview:
The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is offering a summer research program with a stipend valued at $4000, as well as providing housing, food, and up to $400 in travel expenses.

During the eight-week period, students will investigate topics in the interdisciplinary field of Surface and Thin Film Science and Engineering. Participants will contribute to the forefront ofresearch on the synthesis, structure and properties of thin films and materials surfaces. Work side-by-side with faculty mentors, doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in our labs to conduct original research, gain valuable new experience, and make new friends and contacts. The program provides professional development, career exposure, industry visits, advanced analytical skills, and a variety of recreational activities. >Click here to read more about the faculty and research projects affiliated with this program.

All students who have completed at least one year of a science or engineering-based curricula are welcome to apply.

Selection will be based on academic standing and faculty recommendations. Participants are responsible for a written and oral final report as well as submitting a poster of research findings. They will also have numerous social opportunities; including outings to Charlottesville's historic downtown mall for "Fridays After Five" and weekend hiking opportunities in the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park.

Deadline for application submission is March 16, 2012.

Successful applicants will be informed by April 10, 2012.

 

  Information:
  • All students receive a $4,000 (pre-tax) stipend and free, on-campus living accomodations.
  • Up to $400 in travel expenses will be covered by the program.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States who will be undergraduates as of Fall 2012.
