Program Description
Enjoy Engineering for Sustainability is a camp designed to help students discover the joy of engineering. It will provide hands-on activities, lab tours, and creative engineering design projects in a variety of engineering fields. Camp activities will address (1) recycling, (2) transportation, (3) alternative energy, (4) water quality and (5) green building design on UVA grounds and beyond. These activities will show campers how innovations in science and engineering can have a positive impact on the environment, human society and global development.
Instructors and speakers for the camp will include UVA faculty, graduate, & undergraduate students and professional engineers. Campers will work closely with a wide variety of engineers, and learn why they love what they do. Sessions will also focus on the many ways that engineering makes a difference in our world.
Parents & families will be invited to attend Design Team Presentations on Friday, July 20 from 2-4 pm.
Who Can Attend?
The Enjoy Engineering for Sustainability Camp is open to all rising 8th and 9th grade students.
Applicants will be selected on the following criteria:
- Complete application packet including: Application form, essay, and middle school transcripts
- Overall scholastic performance
- Performance in math and sciences courses
- Interest in and motivation for attending Enjoy Engineering, as expressed in applicant's 1-2 page essay

Examples of Camp Activities
When is Enjoy Engineering Camp?
Enjoy 2012 will run from July 16-20. Camp will meet from 9 am to 4:00 pm each day. Participants are responsible for their transportation to and from UVA for this day camp.
What's the Cost?
Thanks to a grant from the UVA G.I.F.T. Sustainability program, we are able to offer the program this year at a discounted rate. The program fee is $125, payable upon acceptance. Lunch will be provided daily.
Application and Selection Process
Please note on the APPLICATION that the following items are required in order to be considered for admission to the camp:
- Completed Application Form
- 1-2 Page Essay (details on application)
- School Transcript from Most Recent School Year
