The Externship program through the Center for Engineering Career Development at the University of Virginia is designed to match students with employers to present students the opportunity to experience a job setting outside of more typical internship arrangements. Externships are typically unpaid and last for a few days. Often the externship will involve a student shadowing an employee of the company to learn more about a particular type of work or industry. The externship program through the Center for Engineering Career Development runs in early March during the University of Virginia spring recess.

Employers have the opportunity to share their industy and work with students aspiring to enter into the same field. Externships are unpaid and therefore, don't cost anything more than a little time and mentorship. Furthermore, it provides opportunities for employers to connect with University of Virginia engineering students. The deadline for employer applications is January 16th. Applications should be filled out and submittled by email to Peggy Reed.

An externship is a great opportunity to get an inside look at an industry or company and the short nature of it means that students who may not be able to take traditional internships can still participate. Externships are unpaid which means that normal employment restrictions do not apply. Student applications are due February 12, 2017. Then, in late February, students will be matched through the CECD with employers who are a good fit. In February and March there will be orientation sessions to prepare students for their externships that will take place between March 6-10, 2017.
