Mary Beck (mpb2h@virginia.edu) has taught Applied Mathematics at
U.Va. since 1989 and has been a Lecturer in Applied
Mathematics since 1995. She teaches all levels of Calculus
to engineering students. Previously, she was Director
of Applied Mathematics Instruction. Before coming to
U.Va., she taught Mathematics at Smith College in Massachusetts.
In 2004, she received the Teacher of the Year Award
from the Rodman Scholars Program, the most recent of
several awards she has been given for undergraduate
teaching and advising. Professor Beck holds an M.S.
in Mathematics from the University of Massachusetts
and a B.S. in Mathematics from Smith College.

John Maybee (jdm9b@virginia.edu) began teaching at U.Va. in 2002 and
has been Associate Professor of Mathematics since 2004.
His previous teaching experience includes being an Instructor,
Assistant and Associate Professor of Mathematics at the
U.S. Air Force Academy. His research includes work building
3D mathematical models of objects photographed from stereo
high-resolution digital imagery for the Defense Mapping
Agency/U.S. Air Force Academy R&D Program.
Between 1980 and 2001, Professor Maybee worked at the
National Security Agency, the Ford Aerospace Corporation,
RWD Technologies, and the PowerVision Corporation. He
holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering
from the University of Michigan, a Masters of Applied
Mathematics from NC State University, and a B.S. from
the U.S. Air Force Academy.

William W. Roberts, Jr. (wwr@virginia.edu)
is the Commonwealth Professor of Engineering and Applied
Science. He arrived at U.Va. as Assistant Professor in
1969, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1974, and
became Professor in 1982.. He has served as the Director
of the Mathematical-Computational Modeling Laboratory
since 1990, Commonwealth Professor since 1992, and the
Director of Applied Mathematics since 2004.
Prior to arriving at U.Va., Professor Roberts earned
his S.B.
in mathematics in 1964 and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics
in
1969, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
His
research activities have a strong focus on formulation
of scientific
and engineering problems in mathematical terms and solution
of the
mathematical equations in the models thus formulated.
He has served
as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator
on grants from
Amoco, Du Pont, Hercules, NASA, NSF, 3M Company, U.S.
Army, VCIT and other sources, totalling over $2,500,000.
