Calculus Selection

Enrolling in the correct calculus course is essential to your success as an engineering student in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). There are three Applied Mathematics (APMA) calculus courses offered:
  • APMA-109 is a single-variable differential calculus course which focuses on the concepts of limits, derivatives, inverse functions, and basic integration techniques.
  • APMA-111 continues where APMA-109 leaves off. It is an integral calculus course which focuses on additional integration techniques and applications as well as topics of parametric and polar equations, and infinite series.
  • APMA-212 extends the concepts from single variable calculus to two or more variables with rich geometric interpretations and applications. The course involves describing and solving problems with vectors in two and three-dimensional space, partial differentiation, multiple integrals, and vector calculus including Green's, Stokes', and the divergence theorem.

As you consider your previous mathematics background in making your calculus selection, it is important to realize that APMA courses focus on applications to engineering and physics and cover some material not routinely covered in high school AP Calculus. Furthermore, calculators are not allowed in the above courses. If you have taken related courses which allowed the use of calculators, you must consider your ability to perform with these subjects without such an aid.

If your decision centers on whether to take APMA-109 or 111, you must focus on your ability with respect to the 109 material. If you have any doubt about your strength on this material and whether you can succeed if you start in APMA-111, we recommend that you take our online Diagnostic Test by clicking on the link below. This is a multiple choice test on key topics from APMA-109. To gain access to this test, you will need to use your UVA Computing ID and password. Prior to taking the test, you may wish to access review material by clicking on the APMA-109 Review link below.

Guidelines to help you select the proper calculus course:

Enroll in APMA-109 if you:

  • Have never taken a calculus course
  • Have had some calculus but received a score of less than 75% on the Diagnostic Test
(You may not take APMA-109 if you received a 4 or 5 on either AP Math Test)

Enroll in APMA-212 if you:

  • Received a 5 on BC Math AP
  • Received a 4 on BC Math AP, 5 AB sub score and plan to take a test to place into APMA 212
(Most students who completed the IB Program in high school enroll in APMA-111; see Professor W. Roberts if you would like to take the placement test for APMA-212).

Enroll in APMA-111 Otherwise
