Virginia Genetically Engineered Machine Team
Introduction
Welcome to the Virginia Genetically Engineered Machine Team's home page! The VGEM Team is a student-run research group at the University of Virginia that is in its third year of competition in MIT's international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition. Our research is in the area of synthetic biology, an emerging engineering discipline that involves the [re]design and construction of biological systems.

Arsenic is a potent toxin leading to necrotic cell death and multi-system organ failure. Many areas of the world are affected by ground-water contamination with arsenic with an estimated total of 137 million people affected. Our goal this year is to engineer E. coli to combat this pollution by sequestering arsenic. Please see the Research page for further details.
